TH 4322 Acting for the Camera
Description: Students prepare and perform commercial and
industrial copy and scripted scenes and monologues with
a focus on the function
and effect of the camera and production process. The course
begins by comparing camera acting to live stage acting
and then continues
to build a camera acting technique. Open to students who
have successfully completed 1301, Beginning Acting for
Non-Majors,
or the 1321/1322 introductory performance sequence, or who
have been auditioned and selected by the instructor.
TH 4550 Video Technology
Description: This course will be an in depth approach to
the area of Video Technology. By the end of the course
the student
should understand and be comfortable with common approaches
to lighting, camera operation, audio, and production practices
for
video production. This course is based both in studio as
well as field. We will also discuss the specifics of video
protocols
and formats. The creative discussions in the class will
include aesthetics, continuity, and composition. The students
understanding
of the topics and techniques discussed in this course will
culminate in their final project. This course has no pre-requisites
and
is open to any student on campus who has an interest in
video or film production. It is also the gateway into the
other
video production courses within the department including
TH4560 Preproduction
for Film/Video, TH5550 Video Project, TH5551 Editing & Postproduction,
TH4554 Graphics and Animation for Film/Video, TH4557 Audio
for Film/Video, TH5553 Video Production Design and Aesthetics,
and
TH5554 Multimedia Production for Live Performance. Realize
we will meet only 7 Saturdays out of the term.
TH 5551
Editing and
Post Production for Video and Film
Description: In the realm of film and video, editing
is what makes the difference between a series of somewhat
related
images and a riveting and engaging story. This course
will
explore the
concepts and techniques of editing and some basic visual
effects. It will also discuss the post production process
and responsibilities
in the area of dramatic film/video production. The students
will recieve hands on training with state of the art
editing equipment
and will work on putting together pieces to tell a story.
The editing part of the class will be based on non-linear
editing
equipment such as AVID DV Express Pro, AVID Media Composer/Adrenaline,
Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, and Vegas Video.
(Students taking this course need or have or currently
be taking TH4550
Video Technology, or have instructor permission.)
TH 4555 Audio Technology
Description: This course introduces and explores the
area of Audio Technology and it's manipulation. The course
will
discuss
the components of sound and how humans hear and interpret
it. Then we will explore audio equipment and discuss,
demonstrate, and have hands on experience with this equipment
as students
learn the general operation and use of the equipment
as well as how it works. Equipment which will be discussed
includes
Mixing
consoles, record/playback, signal processors, microphones,
speakers, interfaces, etc. This will include both demonstrations
as well
as projects which will require the students to work with
and learn this equipment so they understand the basic
manipulation
of sound.
TH 4557 Audio for Film and Video
Description: Audio is a major component to help tell
the story in any film or video project. This course
will explore
the
different uses and techniques used in creating, manipulating,
and dubbing
these audio components into a moving image project.
As a student in this course you will explore areas
such
as effects,
Foley
editing, over dubbing, time code and time sync, field
recording, and scoring. The class will require the
student to not
only learn the principles of these topics but also
experiment with creating
sound as part of a visual story. (Any student taking
this course must have taken or be taking TH4555 Audio
Technology & TH4550
Video Technology, or have instructors permission.)

Forum for pre-planning video projects. Students undertake pre-production
planning for a specific video project, including script development,
scheduling, location scouting, casting, fund-raising, equipment
lists/rentals, and permits.
TH 5550. Video Project.
Students participate in a video-shoot project serving in various
positions, including camera operator, gaffer, grip, audio engineer,
cast, and possibly director and director of photography.
TH 5553. Video Production Design and Aesthetics.
Use of technologies in video/film in making a statement or
communicating an idea/emotion. Creativity, sensitivity to an
audience. Students explore different creative uses of technologies/medium.
TH 5556. Audio Engineering.
Miking/recording techniques specific to music and dramatic
dialogue. Students explore recording different styles of music.
Hands-on experience in recording bands and doing final mixes
to a demo CD. Field trips to professional studios and club/concert
recordings.
